Breaking News: Container Ship Loses Control in Strong Winds at Mundra Port – Containers Toppled, Operations Disrupted
The ultra-large container ship MSC Alexandra (IMO: 9461374) was docked and conducting operations at the port when it was suddenly hit by extreme and unpredictable weather conditions. Powerful gusts of wind caused multiple mooring lines to snap, leaving the vessel temporarily adrift and out of control within the port area.
Severe Weather Triggers Port-Wide Disruptions
According to local sources, the incident was triggered by a rare and intense weather event in the Kutch region of Gujarat, where Mundra Port is located. The area experienced strong winds, thunderstorms, and sudden heavy rainfall, creating hazardous working conditions across the port.
In addition to the vessel losing control, the extreme winds also caused multiple stacked containers in the yard to collapse and overturn. This not only disrupted cargo storage arrangements but also blocked internal transportation routes, forcing a temporary suspension of loading, unloading, and logistics operations.

Collision and Potential Cargo Damage
Reports from Indian shipping media indicate that the MSC Alexandra, which was berthed at CT3 terminal, drifted after its mooring lines failed and collided with port infrastructure currently under construction.
At the same time, several heavy containers were blown over and rolled across the yard, with some sustaining visible damage. The full extent of cargo loss or damage has not yet been officially confirmed.
Possible Delays Across Key Trade Routes
As of March 22, the vessel remains at Mundra Port, and further updates regarding damage assessment and recovery operations are still pending.
The MSC Alexandra typically operates on a major Asia–Middle East shipping route, calling at key ports including:
- Qingdao
- Nansha
- Singapore
- Mundra (incident location)
- Jebel Ali
- Abu Dhabi / Khalifa Port
This incident may lead to schedule disruptions and delays across subsequent ports of call. Shippers, freight forwarders, and supply chain stakeholders with cargo on board are strongly advised to monitor official updates from MSC regarding voyage changes and revised ETAs.
